You tap the camera icon because something is happening in front of you right now, and the screen sits there. A grey rectangle. Maybe a spinner. By the time the viewfinder appears, the moment has gone.
The usual conclusion is that the phone is old and that’s just what old phones do. Sometimes that’s true. More often it isn’t, and the thing actually slowing your phone down is specific, identifiable, and fixable in an afternoon — occasionally in five minutes.
The reason standard advice doesn’t work is that “my phone is slow” is not one problem. It’s four problems that feel identical from the outside and have almost nothing to do with each other. Work out which one you have and the fix usually becomes obvious.
What are the four things that actually make a phone slow?
1. Storage is nearly full. The most common real cause, and the one that produces the most dramatic slowdowns. A phone with almost no free space doesn’t just fail to save new photos — it struggles at everything, constantly, in ways that feel like hardware failure.
2. The battery has aged. Almost nobody knows about this one, and it’s the most valuable thing in this article. On many modern phones, a battery that can no longer deliver full power causes the system to deliberately slow the processor down. The phone isn’t broken. It’s protecting itself. A battery replacement can bring it back.
3. The software has outgrown the hardware. Apps and operating systems get heavier with every update. Your phone doesn’t get faster to match. This one is real and mostly irreversible.
4. One app is misbehaving. A single badly behaved app — often one you barely use — can make the entire phone feel broken while everything else is perfectly healthy.
How do I work out which one I have?
- Open settings and look at storage. If free space is down to the last few percent of the phone’s capacity, stop here. That’s your problem, or most of it. Fix it first and re-assess — it’s common for the other symptoms to disappear along with it.
- Look at battery health, if your phone reports it. On iPhones it’s under Battery in settings, shown as a maximum capacity percentage. On Android it varies by manufacturer; some show a health figure, some don’t show it at all. If the figure is well below 100%, or the phone is a few years old and heavily used, or it shuts down unexpectedly at 20% charge, the battery is a strong suspect.
- Is it slow at everything, or slow at specific things? If the whole phone drags constantly, you’re in cause 1, 2 or 3. If it’s fine until you open one particular app and then everything gets sticky, you’re in cause 4 — and the culprit is usually visible in the battery usage list.
If storage is fine, the battery is healthy, no single app stands out, and the phone has simply become gradually slower across three or four years of updates — that’s cause 3, and you should read the section on when a phone is genuinely finished before spending money on anything.
How full is too full, and what’s taking the space?
Phones need working room. The system uses free space for temporary files, app updates, the juggling that lets several apps stay open, and the housekeeping flash storage requires to stay fast. Take that room away and everything gets slower, including things that seem to have nothing to do with files.
There’s no magic number, and anyone quoting one is guessing. The useful guidance is qualitative: when free space drops into the last few percent of total capacity, you’re in trouble. If you have to check before installing something, you’re already too tight.
What’s using the space is almost always photos and video — not apps. People spend an hour uninstalling apps and free a rounding error, because the actual weight is four thousand photos and a handful of videos, and video is enormous.
- Deal with videos first. Sort your photo library by size if you can. A handful of long videos you’ll never watch again often outweighs everything else combined.
- Move photos off the phone properly. Understand the difference between a service that backs up your photos (they stay on the phone too, so you free nothing) and one that offloads them (full versions in the cloud, small previews on the phone). Only the second frees space.
- Empty the recently-deleted album. Deleted photos typically sit in a recovery album for around a month, occupying space the whole time. This alone can release several gigabytes and people miss it constantly.
- Check downloads and message attachments. Messaging apps quietly keep every image, video and voice note anyone has sent you. The number next to your messaging app on the storage screen is often shocking.
- Then look at apps — at the big ones holding large amounts of data, not the small ones you happen not to use.

Why would an old battery make my phone slow?
A phone’s processor draws power in sharp bursts. Opening the camera demands a large amount of current very suddenly. A new battery supplies that burst without its voltage sagging. An aged battery — hundreds of charge cycles, time spent hot, or both — has higher internal resistance and can’t. When the voltage sags too far under load, the phone shuts down instantly, mid-task, sometimes showing 40% charge.
That’s a genuinely bad experience, so phone makers built a defence. When the system detects a battery that can’t sustain peak demand, it caps how hard the processor is allowed to work, smoothing the bursts so the voltage never sags far enough to trigger a shutdown. The phone stays on. It also becomes noticeably slower.
A large share of “my phone got slow” is really “my battery got old” — and unlike almost every other cause, that one is cheap to reverse.
This became widely known when it emerged that it had been introduced without being clearly explained to users. The response was to make it visible rather than remove it, because the underlying problem is real. On iPhones, the battery health screen tells you outright if performance management has been applied and lets you turn it off, with a warning that unexpected shutdowns may return. Android implementations vary; some manufacturers throttle under similar conditions, many do not surface health at all. The physics is the same on every phone: an old battery cannot deliver what a new one can.
How to check
On iPhones, Settings → Battery shows maximum capacity as a percentage of original, plus a message about peak performance capability. On Android, look for a battery health entry in settings — whether it exists depends entirely on the manufacturer. If your phone doesn’t report it, use behaviour instead: does it drain far faster than it used to, get hot easily, or shut down before reaching zero? Any of those points at the battery.
The honest cost comparison
A battery replacement costs a small fraction of a new phone. That’s the whole argument. If the phone is otherwise fine, still gets security updates, and your only real complaints are speed and battery life, replacing the battery is the highest-return thing you can do to it.
Two caveats. Use a reputable repairer or the manufacturer’s own service — a bad battery is a genuine safety hazard, and on some phones a non-official part triggers warnings or disables health reporting. And if the phone is already near the end of its security update support, put the money toward a replacement instead.
Does restarting actually help?
More often than it has any right to. Phones stay on for weeks or months. Over that time, apps and background processes leak memory, hold resources they no longer need, get stuck retrying against a network that vanished, or leave system caches in a state that can’t be cleaned while everything is running. Restarting clears all of it at once.
If your phone has been on for two months and feels sluggish, restart before doing anything else. It costs a minute. If it fixes things for a while and then degrades again over the following weeks, that’s a clue — something is leaking, and the app-specific section below is where to look.
Should I install updates, or do they make things worse?
Updates bring security fixes for flaws already public and already being exploited, and they frequently bring genuine performance improvements. But the long-run trend is real too: each generation of software assumes slightly more memory, processing power and storage, and a phone that ran its operating system beautifully at launch may struggle with the same system four versions later.
- Always install security updates. A slow phone is annoying; a compromised phone is a different category of problem. This is not the place to optimise.
- Major version upgrades on an old phone deserve a moment’s thought. Waiting a few weeks after a major release to see what owners of your model report is reasonable. Refusing forever is not — eventually you stop getting security fixes entirely.
- App updates are usually fine, though this is where heaviness creeps in fastest, since apps update far more often than the operating system.

How do I find the one app ruining everything?
Start with battery usage. Under Battery in settings, both platforms break down which apps consumed the most power recently, and most separate foreground use from background activity. An app that used a large share of your battery while you weren’t using it is doing work you didn’t ask for — and work costs performance as well as power.
Then check storage per app. Look for anything wildly larger than it should be. A note-taking app occupying several gigabytes is not storing notes.
Then test. Force-quit the suspect and use the phone normally for a few hours. If things improve, you’ve found it. Options from there, in order: update the app in case it’s a known bug that’s been fixed; clear that app’s cache or stored data; uninstall and reinstall; or replace it. Uninstalling a single misbehaving app has rescued more phones than any other action on this list.
One pattern worth recognising: apps that constantly sync, track location, or hold a live connection are the usual offenders. Both platforms let you restrict background activity per app, and for anything you use occasionally that costs you nothing.
What does clearing the cache actually do?
Less than you’ve been promised, and not nothing. A cache is data an app stores locally so it doesn’t have to fetch it again — images, page content, thumbnails. It exists to make the app faster. Clearing it means everything must be re-downloaded, which is slower in the short term. The cache then rebuilds and you’re back where you started.
It’s worth doing in two situations: when a specific app is misbehaving, because a corrupted cache genuinely does cause hangs, crashes and stale nonsense; and when an app’s cache has grown absurdly large and you need the storage back — at which point you’re not clearing cache for speed, you’re freeing space, which is cause 1, and it works.
What it is not is a maintenance ritual. Clearing every app’s cache weekly makes your phone slower on average. It’s also largely an Android concept, because iOS handles this itself. Which brings us to the industry built on the misunderstanding.
Are cleaner and booster apps worth installing?
No. They are at best useless and frequently harmful, and this needs saying plainly because search results for slow phones are full of them.
Free RAM is not a goal. This is the misunderstanding the whole category rests on. Modern phone operating systems deliberately keep memory full, holding recently used apps in RAM so they resume instantly instead of reloading. Unused memory is wasted memory. A booster that force-closes background apps to show you a satisfying number of freed megabytes has guaranteed those apps must reload from scratch, using more processing and battery than leaving them alone. It made your phone slower to show you a bigger number.
They fight the operating system. Both platforms have memory management refined over years by the people who wrote the system. A third-party app second-guessing that from outside does not improve on it.
They consume what they claim to free. A cleaner has to run constantly to monitor and “optimise” — occupying memory, waking the processor and draining battery, permanently, in exchange for a notification telling you it saved you something.
Many exist for other reasons entirely. The business model of a free cleaner is advertising, aggressive subscription upsells, or data collection — often all three. They request broad permissions because the pitch requires deep access, which makes them an attractive place to put something you wouldn’t otherwise install.
It’s the same pattern we worked through in whether antivirus is necessary: software sold on a feeling of vulnerability, doing work the operating system already does better, charging you in performance and money for the reassurance. Security theatre and performance theatre are the same business.
What settings actually make a difference?
Reduce motion and animation. Every transition — opening an app, returning to the home screen, switching screens — plays an animation that takes a fixed amount of time. Shortening or disabling them doesn’t make the phone faster, but it makes it feel dramatically faster, because you stop waiting for decoration. On iPhones it’s under Accessibility as Reduce Motion. On Android it’s usually three animation scale settings in developer options. Do this on any phone that feels sluggish; the effect is immediate.
Live wallpapers and heavy widgets. A moving wallpaper renders continuously whenever the home screen is visible, and live-data widgets poll in the background. Not catastrophic, but on a struggling phone a static wallpaper and fewer widgets is free performance.
Background app refresh. Genuinely useful for a handful of apps and pure overhead for the rest. Go through the list and turn it off for anything that doesn’t need to be current the instant you open it.
Which apps are usually the heavy ones?
The browser. Modern web pages are heavy — scripts, trackers, ads, video that starts on its own. On an older phone, a browser with twenty tabs open is one of the most demanding things running. Close tabs, and enable whatever content blocking your browser offers, because a substantial share of what a page loads is not the page. Reading mode, where available, is transformative on slow hardware.
Messaging and social apps. These accumulate media relentlessly and sync in the background. Two things help without giving them up: turn off automatic download of photos and video so attachments arrive only when you ask, and periodically clear stored media from old conversations. Where a service offers a web version, using it in the browser removes a permanently running background process — a reasonable trade for anything you check occasionally.
Is a factory reset worth doing?
Back up first. Completely, and verify the backup exists before you start. A reset erases everything and there is no undo. Check your photos are somewhere other than the phone, that your messages are backed up if you care about them, and that you know the credentials for the account the phone will ask you to sign back into. People lose years of photographs at this step every day.
What a reset will fix: accumulated software mess, misconfigured settings you can’t find, corrupted system state, a persistent problem caused by an app you can’t identify, and years of accumulated data.
What it will not fix: a degraded battery, a full storage drive that will simply refill when you restore your backup, or software too heavy for the hardware. If the cause is physical or generational, a reset buys you nothing.
One detail that matters: restoring a full backup immediately afterwards can restore the problem with it. For the real benefit, set the phone up fresh, restore only photos and essential data, and reinstall apps deliberately rather than in bulk.
When is a phone genuinely finished?
Some phones cannot be fixed, and it’s more useful to say so than to send you round the loop again.
The clearest signal has nothing to do with speed. When a phone stops receiving security updates, it’s finished — regardless of how it performs. It will keep working. It will also accumulate publicly known, permanently unpatched vulnerabilities, on a device holding your messages, email, photos and quite possibly your banking. That’s a security problem first and a speed problem second, and it’s the one line worth respecting absolutely. Check your manufacturer’s stated support window; if you’ve passed it, plan a replacement rather than optimising.
Short of that, a phone is finished when the storage is too small to be workable no matter how carefully you manage it, the battery has been replaced and it’s still slow, and the software it must run has clearly outgrown the hardware. That combination is genuine end of life. Everything before it is worth trying first.
What should I look for in the next one?
Buy more storage than you think you need. This is the decision that ages best. Storage can’t be upgraded later on most phones, it’s the most common cause of a phone feeling slow, and your usage only grows — photos get larger, video gets higher resolution, apps get heavier. The next tier up costs a modest amount at purchase and determines whether the phone is pleasant to use in year four.
Check the update commitment before you buy. How many years of operating system and security updates does the maker promise? That number is the phone’s real lifespan, it varies enormously between manufacturers at the same price, and it matters more than most of the specifications on the box.
Be relaxed about the processor. Beyond the very bottom of the market, the chip is rarely what makes a phone feel slow three years later. Storage pressure and battery age get there first — and on the phone you already own, checking free storage, checking battery health, restarting it and turning down the animations is about twenty minutes of work that accounts for the large majority of phones that feel finished but aren’t.

No, and it usually makes it slower. Swiping apps away forces them to fully reload next time, using more processing and battery than leaving them suspended. Both operating systems suspend background apps automatically and reclaim their memory when something else needs it. Close an app when it’s genuinely misbehaving, not as a habit.
Will replacing the battery definitely make my phone faster?
It will if the slowness came from the system limiting performance to compensate for a weak battery, which is common on an older, heavily used phone.
